Camp Orchid
Capturing the photos of the wild requires a great deal of patience. But as a wildlife photographer, I know that it is one of the most rewarding endeavours for any photographer. I realised this when I first visited Phulwari ki Nal Wildlife Sanctuary to shoot the wild landscape. The park literally hypnotises anyone with the beautiful floral blanket that envelops an area of 511.41 km2. It happens with me often! A rich variety of flowering plants, shrubs, herbs and climbers grow here. And so it is named as ‘Phulwari’ wildlife sanctuary that translates into an ‘abode of flowers.’ It is among the few places in Rajasthan that are known to have the ‘richest biodiversity.’ It is due to this reason the place was declared as a sanctuary in 1983 by the State Government of Rajasthan.
As you enter the Forest area, you can find thick vegetation of tall dry deciduous trees and bamboo. There is also a beautiful orchidarium built by the Forest Department which is home to rich and rare species of Orchids.
But there is more adding to its panoramic beauty. The sanctuary sits amidst the Aravalli hill ranges in Udaipur district of Rajasthan. It is split into two portions by the Wakal River, the lifeline of the sanctuary which joins Sabarmati River in Gujarat State. The geography of the Phulwari ki Nal Wildlife Sanctuary makes the place a nature lover’s heaven.
So, if you are thinking of visiting the place to photograph its landscape, you are in the right place!
Now, coming to my favourite, the wildlife, there is an amazing number of creatures you will encounter. Once a hunting ground for the rulers of Bhomat, the sanctuary is now a haven for Flying Squirrel, Three-striped Palm Squirrel, Leopard, Hanuman Langoor, Indian Peafowl, Sloth Bear, Jungle Cat, Bengal Fox, Golden Jackal, Striped Hyena, Grey Jungle Fowl, Green Whine Snake and over 160+ species of birds and reptiles.
The tribal communities living around the Phulwari ki Nal Wildlife Sanctuary is another great treat for the tourists. Known as the Meena’s, Garasiya’s, and Kathodies, the tribes, even today, live the aboriginal lifestyle. You can explore, learn, and take back some wonderful moments - as I do it always.
