Camp Chinkara
51 km south-east from the magnificent city of lakes, Udaipur lies Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary. I love the unworldly set up of thick forests, hills, valleys, innumerable bird and animal species and lots of crocodiles that make up the sanctuary. The best way to live this incredible experience is nature camps settled right in the lap of the ecosystem.
Jaisamand lake situated near the edge of Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary magnifies its charm. The second-largest artificial lake in Asia is a feast for the eyes when viewed from the historic palaces Hawa Mahal and Roothi Rani Ka Mahal. The lake is home to a colourful variety of fishes, amphibians, and other aquatic animals.
Also popular as ‘Dhebar Lake’, the attraction was designed by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1685 AD. Its dimensions are worth remarking stretching 9 miles in breadth, 102 feet in depth and 30 miles in circumference. An elegant marble staircase leads to marble Chhatris (cenotaph) and a Shiva temple on its bank that marks the grace of this lake. There are six marble Chhatris decorated with beautiful elephant sculptures in the front. Through my eyes, this lake is the beginning of an exciting adventure to the Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary.
Across an area of 160 sq.km in the sanctuary, I have spotted carnivores like leopard, fox, wolf, hyena and omnivores like wild boar and sloth bear. Harmonising the balance of ecosystem are the herbivores like chital, chinkara, sambar deer and many more.
Being a bird’s paradise it harbours Black Neck Stork, Sarus Crane, Indian Pitta, Open Bill Stork, Pond Heron, Little Cormorant, Indian Paradise Flycatchers, Owls, Darter etc. Jaisamand Lake in its vicinity is one of those freshwaters that are the abode of plenty of crocodiles.
